Peonies, many gardeners do not belong to the elite plants. But grown with pleasure because of the lush flowers with an attractive color.

Flower growers know that the most attention should be paid to peonies in the fall in order to get a luxurious flowering next year. An event that should not be neglected is the trimming of peonies in the fall.

It enables the flower:

  • rest after intense flowering;
  • recover before the onset of winter cold;
  • accumulate enough moisture for future shoots.

The value of the autumn pruning is great, so you need to perform it correctly. The main parameters that flower growers pay attention to are when and how to trim peonies in autumn.

Inexperienced gardeners doubt the need for pruning a flower in the fall. They cut off the heads with faded flowers immediately after the flowering of the bush.

In this case, the following year receive a lush green bush with luxurious foliage, but not flowers. This is due to the fact that the plant does not have enough time for the formation of buds for the next flowering. The second reason is the lack of nutrients for tuber growth.

The timing of autumn pruning peonies

First of all, gardeners need to wait for the flowers to bloom on the peonies. They may simply fade or fall off. Now the bush directs all forces to the formation of flower buds for the next year and the growth of the bulb. Transfer pruning in the spring should not be optimal to trim the bushes in the fall. But when it is carried out in the fall to help the plant as much as possible?

The beginning of autumn is not the best period. At this time, pruning will weaken the bush, which will adversely affect peony flowering next year. The processes of photosynthesis will be disturbed, and the roots will lack the necessary nutrients. Yes, and in the winter cold weakened plants can respond to a decrease in flowering mass. Although peonies are considered cold-tolerant and calmly grow in one place for more than 10 years.

The most appropriate period is considered to be late autumn with the first frosts. Usually this time falls on the end of October or the beginning of November. The term of pruning varies depending on the climatic characteristics of the region in which the flower is grown. Now the flower is ready for a period of rest, in other words, the development process in the season is over.

Some flower growers intuitively determine when it is possible to prune ahead of time. The exceptions are:

  • early drying of peonies;
  • the presence of diseases.

In other cases, do not hesitate, and hold the autumn pruning of the flower in the recommended time frame.

Fall Flower Technology

To confidently begin pruning, consider all the nuances of autumn care for peonies.

When the time of the procedure has already been determined, it is necessary to pay attention to the rules that should be strictly followed.

You need to remove the above-ground part of the plant, carefully cutting off the leaves and stems with a sharp tool.

It is even slightly buried in the ground to remove the necessary parts. The exception is the stems above the growth buds, they can be left. The length of such stalks should not exceed 4-5 cm. Although you can define for them another, convenient for you length.

After the pruning procedure, you need to collect plant residues, move it out of the garden and burn it.

Important! Do not cover the ground above the peony with cut leaves, so as not to attract pests to winter.

Peat and humus are excellent materials for hiding flowers during the autumn period. They will not only save the peonies from freezing, but also additionally warm the plants.

Experienced growers sprinkle the soil and cut areas with woody ash. It simultaneously disinfects and nourishes the future luxurious flowers at the moment when the autumn pruning is completed.

Important! If tree peonies grow on the site, then dry leaves and broken branches on the bushes are removed in April. The above pruning method refers to grassy varieties.

Bushes after pruning

Be sure to check the degree of moisture of the ground in the cut. If it is dry, watering and feeding the bushes is required. For the autumn nutrition of pions, bone meal, wood ash, ready-made mineral compounds are used.

Despite the fact that the trimming procedure itself is not considered difficult, some gardeners still manage to make mistakes:

  1. Begin to trim the peonies immediately after flowering. This happens at the end of the summer. The plant has time to release new shoots, spending a lot of strength on their growth. When the first frosts they die, and the bush is now not enough food for the development of the bulb. Therefore, the flowering next summer will be either very meager, or you, in general, will not wait for beautiful inflorescences.
  2. Blooming inflorescences are still cut off. This happens when peony bushes are part of design projects on the territory of the summer cottage. The bouquet of peonies looks very luxurious, but the number of inflorescences next year will be significantly reduced.
  3. Late with the autumn pruning of peonies. The plant does not have time to update the root system, which can simply rot.

As soon as the autumn pruning of plants is completed, watering and feeding is carried out, it is necessary to cover the peonies for wintering. This is also an important procedure for preserving flowers for the next season.

It is of particular importance for those varieties that are grown in the region with frosty, snowless winters. How to cover the peonies for the winter?

First, estimate the depth of the growth points. If the value does not exceed 4-6 cm, then it is necessary to sprinkle the stems with soil. On top of a layer of covering material:

  • fallen leaves;
  • lapnik;
  • compost;
  • peat.

The thickness of the shelter should not be less than 10-15 cm. In this case, after trimming your pions will receive reliable protection from frost and penetrating wind.

To carry out the autumn pruning under the force even to novice gardeners. And experienced gardeners themselves assess the condition of the plants and choose the time for pruning, taking into account all the conditions.
