Tomato Orange Elephant: reviews, photos

Manufacturers who are also breeders at the same time are interested in working with serial tomatoes, as they often have similar genetic roots, but may differ by a number of signs that are interesting for different gardeners. On the other hand, the passion of many people for collecting makes them, having acquired any one tomato from the whole series, to want to try everything else. Especially, if the experience of growing the first grade was successful.

And this is more than justified in relation to a group of tomatoes, united by the fact that the word “elephant” appears in the name of the variety. All tomato "elephants" are quite unpretentious in care, but they differ in a variety of colors, tastes and sizes of fruits and the plants themselves.

In this article we will talk about the tomato called Orange Elephant, which by its characteristics is the smallest representative of this tomato family. Other "elephants", such as the Pink Elephant or the Crimson Elephant, are more suitable for their size by the size of their fruits and bushes.

Variety description

Tomato Orange Elephant, like most of its counterparts from this series of tomatoes, was obtained by the breeders of the agricultural firm "Gavrish". It is on sale in bags of the Russian Bogatyr series. In 2011, this tomato was included in the State Register of Breeding Achievements of Russia. It was recommended for cultivation in all regions of Russia in film or polycarbonate greenhouses.

Attention! This variety of tomatoes was specially bred for growing in greenhouses.

Of course, in the southern regions of Russia you can try to grow it in open ground. This condition is primarily due to the fact that this tomato has a rather early ripening period. Tomatoes ripen about 100-110 days after the emergence of full shoots. Therefore, in order to get a really early crop of tomatoes, it is desirable to plant the seedlings into the ground as early as possible, not later than May.

For the southern regions with a warm and sometimes hot spring, it is quite acceptable. But in the middle lane and in Siberia in May, tomato seedlings can be planted only in greenhouses, in extreme cases under film shelters. On the other hand, the first mature fruits can be obtained at the end of June, in July, when they are planted in the greenhouse.

Tomato Orange elephant belongs to the determinant type, which means it is limited in growth. And, indeed, its height in the open ground does not exceed 60-70 cm. When cultivated in a greenhouse, the bush can reach a height of 100 cm. Although, according to reviews of gardeners, in some areas with a warm climate, the tomato Orange Elephant has reached a height of 1.6 meters

Since the tomato Orange Elephant is determinantal, it does not need to be staved. But the garter to the stakes will never be superfluous, because without it the bushes with ripening tomatoes can simply fall to the ground. The leaves on the bushes are of medium size, dark green, traditional tomato shape.

Variety description will be incomplete without such characteristics as yield, but here the Orange Elephant was not up to par. On average, from one bush you can get from two to three kilograms of tomatoes. And from one square meter of planting can be obtained, thus, up to 7-8 kg of fruit.

Tip! If you are chasing yields, try planting a pink or crimson elephant. They have yield indicators 1.5-2 times more.

The variety is quite resistant to adverse weather conditions, it is especially well tolerated in the heat, including the anomalous one. Not bad fruit sets in these conditions, therefore, suitable for growing gardeners from the southern regions. Fruits are not subject to cracking. With regard to disease resistance, it is on the average level, along with most tomato varieties.

Fruit characteristics

Orange elephant variety tomatoes are distinguished by the following characteristics:

  • The shape of the fruit is traditionally round, but slightly flattened at the top and bottom. At the base of the stem is ribbed.
  • At the stage of technical maturity, the fruits are green in color and become bright orange when ripe.
  • The skin is rather dense, smooth, the surface of the tomato is elastic.
  • The flesh is tender, juicy, its color is soft-orange. Tomatoes contain a large amount of beta-carotene, which prevents the aging process, as well as a positive effect on vision, immunity and regeneration processes on the skin.
  • Manufacturers claim that the average weight of tomatoes is 200-250 grams. It is possible that such fruits can be achieved by rationing the number of fruits in the hands. According to reviews of gardeners, the weight of tomatoes on average is only 130-170 grams.
  • The taste of tomatoes is rated as excellent. The fruits have a rich, sweetish taste and pleasant aroma.
  • The number of seed nests is average - from three to four.
  • The fruits are best used for making salads and tomato juice of the original color. For canning for the winter, they are not very suitable, except for making sauces, squash caviar and similar dishes.
  • Of all the elephant family, it is the Orange Elephant that is best kept and transports transport.
  • It ripens well in room conditions, without losing its taste.
  • The fruiting period is long - tomatoes can tie fruit and ripen for several months.

Advantages and disadvantages

Like most vegetables, the Orange Elephant variety has advantages that gardeners appreciate choosing this tomato for growing:

  • Fruiting for a long period.
  • Good fruit preservation and transportability, unlike other tomato "elephants".
  • The original color and excellent taste of the fruit.
  • Increased utility of tomatoes, due to the content of various additional elements and vitamins.
  • Disease resistance.
  • Unpretentiousness in cultivation.

Among the relative disadvantages include:

  • Not the largest size of the fruit, compared with other tomato "elephants".
  • Not as high yield as the other comrades in the series.

Features of growing

Since the orange elephant tomato in most regions is recommended to be grown in greenhouses, the sowing of seeds for seedlings can be done starting in March. If there is a desire to experiment, gardeners of the southern regions can try to sow this tomato in April in the soil of an unheated greenhouse, so that they can later be transplanted into open ground or left to grow under the roof all summer.

Comment! The Orange Elephant variety is distinguished by unpretentiousness, therefore, the main thing that it needs during the seedling period is an abundance of light and moderate watering with the same moderate (cool) temperature regime.

In such conditions, the seedlings will increase the maximum number of roots and will be able to quickly grow to the height after planting.

When sowing seeds in fertile soil fertilizing before planting tomatoes at a permanent place is not required. It is necessary to plant seedlings, keeping a sufficient distance between plants (at least 30-40 cm), even if at first it seems that they are planted too far apart.

It is very desirable to tie up the seedlings of the Orange Elephant to the stakes immediately after planting and mumble with straw or rotted sawdust. If everything is done correctly, in the future care will be reduced to watering once a week, fertilizing twice a month and harvesting.

Reviews gardeners

Reviews gardeners about tomato Orange elephant ambiguous, but generally positive.

Dmitri, 39, AbinskKupil bag with tomato seeds Orange elephant a few years ago, but somehow it all postponed his landing. This year, he planted it, finally, on the seedlings, along with 5-6 varieties of other tomatoes. All landed in open ground. And the Orange Elephant turned out to be the best. In the summer, it was catastrophically hot, and he was the only one of the tomatoes who tolerated these conditions normally and did not burn. On many other bushes the fruit came across with rot, the same sort of tomatoes were smooth, beautiful, without a speck. At the same time quite large sizes. I will plant it now. Irina, 35 years old, Balabanovo, planted an Orange Elephant tomato in a greenhouse. It seems to me that the yield was very good. I even calculated that 4 brushes with 4 fruits each were ripe on one bush. Each fruit was weighing about 200 grams, so consider yourself. The taste is good - sweet, juicy with a slight sourness. Suitable for salads, and for canning, if you cut them into pieces. Natalia, 42, Orenburg Growing this variety of tomato last year, this is also planned to plant several bushes. They sowed in mid-March, the seeds sprouted well, the seedlings were quite strong. In the ground for temporary shelter landed in late May. Tomatoes turned out large in size, beautiful color, smooth. Fleshy, but at the same time juicy and tender. They are not suitable for salting in banks, but they are very good as an additive to other vegetable preparations, when you need to make tomato paste or mashed potatoes. They are also good in salads, especially when mixed with tomatoes of other colors. Olga, 32, Kostroma, has planted an Orange Elephant in open ground, the bushes have grown no more than 70 cm. The variety is determinant, it has already ripened closer to August. The fruits are quite smooth, neat, dense, taste good, sweet. Productivity, however, was average.

Conclusion

Among tomatoes with an exotic color of fruits, the Orange Elephant stands out primarily for its unpretentiousness. Therefore, novice gardeners who are afraid, because of their inexperience, to take on exotic varieties of tomatoes, can be advised to start with this variety.
