The very name of a tomato variety can tell a lot about the ideas that its creators, plant breeders, have put into it. Canopus is one of the largest and most significant stars in the sky, which ranks second in brightness among all the stars visible from Earth after Sirius (not counting, of course, the Sun). Tomato Canopus, judging by its characteristics in the description of the variety, also occupies far from the last place in the seemingly endless world of tomatoes in its diversity.
This tomato is able to interest and experienced farmers, thanks to its indicators of yield, and novice summer residents because of the simplicity in the care and resistance to many diseases and pests.
Tomato variety Kanopus was born about 20 years ago thanks to the efforts of scientists-breeders from the Institute of Cytology and Genetics, which is under the jurisdiction of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Scientists at the research center of this institute have developed many interesting varieties of vegetables, and, above all, tomatoes, which are particularly resistant to the vagaries of the weather and the various manifestations of pathogenic organisms.
Since the Canopus variety comes from Siberia, more precisely, from Novosibirsk, it is most suitable for cultivation in the difficult conditions of the Siberian summer, as well as for all regions with similar climatic conditions. However, in other regions of Russia, the Canopus tomato was also appreciated and is happy to grow it both in greenhouse conditions and on ordinary beds in open ground.
By the way, this variety of tomatoes was registered in the State Register of Breeding Achievements of Russia back in 2000 and recommended for cultivation throughout the country specifically in open ground conditions.
Seeds of the variety Kanopus are found on sale or directly from the manufacturer (SIBNIIRS) or in packages of seed companies located mainly beyond the Urals - “Seeds of Altai”, “Ural summer resident”, “Agros”, “Plasma seeds”.
Tomato plants Canopus are determinant because they have limited growth. When grown in outdoor conditions, they do not need to be staked or to form.Attention! When grown in greenhouse conditions, the Canopus tomato is best formed in two stems - this can lead to obtaining the maximum effect both in yield and in size of tomatoes and in terms of ripening.
The garter may be necessary, as a very large number of tomatoes are tied up on the bushes, and under their weight the bushes can fall to the ground and even break. In addition, the garter of branches, and sometimes fruit, often greatly facilitates the harvest. But with a large number of bushes in industrial cultivation it is possible to do without a garter. In this case, the tomatoes may have to be collected directly from the ground.
Canopus tomato bushes are relatively compact in size, reaching only 50-60 cm in height. Therefore, they can easily be planted on the beds in the earliest periods, covering the first few weeks with arcs with any nonwoven material or film.
Canopus shrubs have a medium foliage and branching. Leaves traditional form of tomato, dark green color.
A simple inflorescence is formed only after 7-8 leaves, later they are laid either through one or two leaves.
If we talk about the ripening period, the variety Canopus belongs to mid-ripening tomatoes - the vegetative period, starting from the moment of emergence of full shoots, is about 115-120 days.
In terms of yield, the Canopus tomato rightfully belongs to the champions in the tomato world. No wonder this variety quickly attracted the attention of farmers and those who are trying to grow tomatoes mainly for sale. On average, the yield per square meter is 3–3.5 kg of commercial quality tomatoes. But with good care, the same number of fruits can be obtained from one bush, and at the same time they collect up to 5-6 kg of excellent quality tomatoes from a square meter.
The variety Canopus, in addition, is distinguished by genetic immunity to the tobacco mosaic virus and good resistance to late blight and various types of bacterial spots. According to the experience and reviews of growing various pests from the world of insects also bypass it.Important! Originators note the resistance of this tomato to dry conditions, which makes its cultivation attractive for southern regions.
And, of course, the variety of tomato of the Siberian selection should be relatively easy to withstand various kinds of natural disasters, which is quite true for tomato Canopus.
Characteristics of tomatoes
Tomato Canopus, according to its originator’s stated characteristics, belongs to a relatively rare type - it has rather long oblong or almost oval fruits. True, the shape of the fruit can vary greatly in different growing conditions. The very first or largest tomatoes on the bushes often have a more traditional flattened shape. The smooth surface of the fruit may change and become slightly folded at the base of the stem.
Most often, the average size of the fruit is small, the weight of one tomato can vary from 110 to 180 grams. But with the use of special methods of cultivation (formation in one stem, constant pinching and, of course, providing the maximum amount of sunlight and plenty of food), fruits from these tomatoes weighing up to 400 grams, or even more, each can be obtained.
The color of Canopus tomatoes at the stage of technical maturity is green with a pronounced dark green spot in the region of the stem. Fully matured tomatoes differ in bright red color.
Each tomato has more than 4 seed nests, the skin is quite dense, the flesh is elastic, fleshy, with sufficient content of juice.
Tomatoes Canopus are distinguished by good taste characteristics, someone is delighted with them, others consider them ordinary and even sour. In any case, the taste, as well as the size of the fruit, is largely dependent on the growing conditions and quantity, as well as the quality of the nutrients introduced.Comment! But the producers of agricultural products fully appreciated the good preservation of tomatoes of this variety and their high suitability for transportation over considerable distances.
To destination Canopus tomatoes belong to the universal type. They are good for summer salads, they make wonderful tomato products like ketchup, adjika, juice. And thanks to the relatively small size of most of the fruits, they are great for pickles and pickles.

Antonina, 52, Yaroslavl Canopus tomato seeds were advised in the store. I grew them in a greenhouse - I liked them a lot. There were a lot of fruits on every bush. They were delicious, meaty, fragrant. She spun a lot of tomato juice for the winter, made adjika, lecho and other blanks. Yes, and so in salads, they were very good. The following year, I collected seeds, I will definitely grow from my own seeds. Valery, 32, Kuibyshev Rastili Canopus tomato in that year - he was not impressed at all. Tomatoes were maybe a lot, but they don’t taste at all. In the end, she let everything go on conservation. Victoria, 48 years old, Magnitogorsk. I want to share my impressions of the Canopus tomato variety. In all respects - a great variety! Shrubs of low growth, up to about 50 cm, look great on garden beds. No special formation and pinching require. I just cut off the lower yellow leaves, those that were formed below the first ovary. On each bush up to 30 - 40 different sizes of tomatoes, from small, weighing 80-100 grams, up to 250 grams. Tomatoes hang tassels, each can form from 3 to 7 fruits. Their taste is very rich, tomato, sweet with a little sourness. The flesh is very dense, so tomatoes are suitable for all kinds of blanks. Yes, and so their food is also quite possible. I have grown this variety since 1998 and have never been without a crop. In the sense of disease or some kind of pest problems with it, too, especially not. In general, I have it in my favorites. Galina, 37 years old, Izhevsk. Canopus grew tomato in 2008. All characteristics were very similar to those claimed by the manufacturers, except for the size of the fruit. I basically had them weighing 80-100 grams, the maximum reached 150 grams, but no more. And so delicious tomatoes are suitable for anything, and, most importantly, they really mature a lot.
Canopus tomatoes are able to take a worthy place in any collection, as unpretentiousness and resistance to diseases combine well with their high yield.
